1. What is Animation?

Ans. A state of motion or an illusion of life. A sequence of drawings which show movement in an object is called animation. In technical language we can say giving life to any 2D/3D character/object.

2. From where the word Animation derived?

Ans. From Latin methodology the word “Animare”. In Latin medical terms Animare meant as

giving life or fill with breath.

3. What is Kinesiology?

Ans. The branch of physiology that studies the mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement. A brief knowledge on human muscular movements.

4.What is PAN?

Ans. When a camera moves in horizontal axis in a 3D space either left or right than it is knowas PAN.



5.What are the other names of graph editor?

Ans. A spline /curve/tangent editor (A technique where all three axis of an object are manipulated to bring a change in timing & meaning without moving the object.


6. Difference between 2D & 3D?

Ans. 2d means two dimensional where everything is measured/calculated as per length & width. Where as in 3d along with length & width we can have a command over another axis that is depth.



7. What are the different types of animation?

Ans. 2d, 3d, Stop Motion animation, Cell animation, Clay animation, Cutout animation, Puppet animation, Sand animation, Paper animation etc.

8. What is there in 2D?

Ans. A visual representing on any flat screen measured in two axis. In general a 2d animation is to display several pictures in a rapid movement to create the illusion of movement

9. What is 3D?

Ans. Having a three-dimensional form or appearance. A technique to visualize or see an object in all 3 angles


10. What is Right Hand rule?

Ans. Based on Maths and Physics, the right-hand rule is a common formula for understanding notation conventions for vectors in 3 dimensions. It was invented for use in electromagnetism by British scientist Zachariah William Cole in the late 1800s.

11. What is perspective?

Ans. A software technique that represents three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface. The appearance of things relative to one another as determined by their distance from the viewer.

12. What are 7 and half feet characters are called as?

Ans. A stretched or tall character.

13. What is truck in?

Ans. Also referred to as Push-in/Push-out. An adjustment in the cameras framing that allows the view to tighten up or widen.

Ans. It is one of the animation principles. The action/reaction of a character made more noticeable than usual



15. Difference between cartoon & realistic animation?

Ans. A clip produced by a series of cartoon drawings to give the illusion of movement when projected in rapid sequence is cartoon animation. When an object in 3d environment is deigned, modeled, rigged, textured animated than rendered with high end machines to produce good quality which very much resembles to real world is know as realistic animation.

16. What is creativity?

Ans. The ability to create something different & unique. Someone who generates new ideas both technically & in artistic way.

18. What is stretch & squash?

Ans. One of the basic animation principles. It is a way of deforming an object/character based on its own elastic power without losing its volume

20. What is cushion?

24. Is drawing necessary for animation?

Ans. Not necessary but will be an added advantage. The knowledge of basic human anatomy while in different poses is important.

Ans. A good camera settings & knowledge of its parameters can take the cinematography to higher level. It gives many effects to bring interest in a scene like blur, focus on a point, following an object with different angles etc.

26. What is basic pipeline of complete animation in a production house?

Ans. First comes the idea, than story, followed by script. When everything is finalized than as per story characters are deigned, modeled, textured, rigged and animated as per the medium preferred. After composition & special effects added final rendering is done to get video clip.

27. Difference between animation in gaming & in movies?

Ans. Low polygon models are used & mainly focused on game art rather than facial expression or Lip Sync. In movies extreme care is taken in animation especially in body mechanics to present realism to viewers or match with live action.

Ans. Sir Richards Willam an author of the famous book-An Animators Survival Kit & the director of Oscar awarded movie “Who Framed Roger’s Rabbit”

29. What is primary action & secondary action?

Ans. Anticipation is of the primary action. The action which comes after anticipation is called primary action. Secondary action generally followed by primary action. Follow through & overlapping are two types of secondary action.

30. What are ARCS?

Ans. It is one of the animation principles. It came it to existence after thorough study of human & animal anatomy. As every organic/muscular part of a living being moves in an arc it is strictly followed in animation.

31. In how many ways animation can be done?

Ans. Mostly in two ways. One is pose to pose, 2nd one is straight ahead.

33. How we can identify animation speed?

Ans. By number of frames. 1 second = 24 frames or 1 frame =1/24 second.

34. What are frames in animation?

Ans. A unit in which speed is defined for an animation. A single set of a transparent drawing or pictures moving in a sequence or in series.

35. What is relation between timing & spacing in animation?

Ans. The coordination of duration & distance covered to achieve a desired effect. Timing gives the meaning to a movement. The distance between two frames is called spacing. In animation if frames are more than action will be slow and if frames are less than action will be fast.

36. What is the best way for approaching to animate a shot?

Ans. Thorough planning, storyboarding along with thumbnails is important. A good knowledge of scene & an idea of director or supervisor’s vision will be helpful.

37. How important is anticipation in animation?

Ans. It is one the most important principles of animation. The preparation of an action or a slight movement in opposite direction of an action is called anticipation.

38. What is storyboard?

Ans. A set of drawings outlining the plot and shot sequence for something to be filmed. An action representing the storyboard & as per script.

39. What are thumbnails?

Ans. A rough but small series of image drawn of any character along with layout given in storyboard.

40. What are the basic tools for 2D animation?

Ans. Drawing papers, pencils, light box, stationery etc.

41. Is acting skill necessary for animation & how important it is?

Ans. Yes very much necessary. To bring the life to a character an artist himself need to act first or portray the same action to have a better sense & understanding of movements & attitude.

42. How we can show a weight & life in a 3d animation?

Ans. With strong & dynamic poses we can show weight along with the line of action. The slight movements of fingers, secondary actions, sign of breathing & with eye blinks we can show life in 3d character.

43. What is the history behind animation?

Ans. In 1874 the first comic book was produced in Britain & in 1895 the first show by the lemire brothers in Paris. In 1928 Disney introduced character called Mickey in sound animation film called “Steam boat willic”

44. What is facial & lip sync animation?

Ans. Along with body mechanics, facial expression & Lip Sync play a very important role in bringing life to an animated character. Face represent the expressions matching with the body language where as lip should match the dialogue of the particular scene.

45. How to identify a 2D & 3D animation?

Ans. In any clip if the character in the screen is shown in all 3dimensional ways with the help of camera than that is referred as 3d animation. If a series of drawing moved rapidly to produce a smooth action on a flat screen than it known as 2d animation.

Ans. Apart from Movies, TV Commercials, Television shows, Games, widely it is been used in forensic, automobile & in defence field for presentations.

50. Difference between traditional animation & motion capture animation?

Ans. Both are some what similar in terms of rigorous hard work but are far different in producing, implementing & medium used. One is completely based on hand drawn with huge no. of drawings, sketches etc with while the latter is a sample of modern technology. The former is more creative while the artists for Mocap should be technically more sound.
